Plus Ethics at the XIV Spanish Congress of Criminology: Lights and Shadows of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement
We are excited to announce our upcoming presentation at the XIV Spanish Congress of Criminology, titled “Lights and Shadows: A Systematic Review of the Social Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement from a European Perspective”, authored by Alejandro Nicolás Sánchez, Noelia Caraballo Miguel, and Estefanía Martínez Mora. This presentation will explore the dual aspects of AI’s integration into law enforcement, shedding light on its potential benefits while critically examining the accompanying challenges.
In the last decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a groundbreaking tool in various fields, including law enforcement. European initiatives, such as the EU-funded STARLIGHT project, have accelerated the adoption of AI technologies in policing. However, the implications of these technologies extend beyond technical considerations, necessitating a comprehensive exploration of their social and ethical impacts.
Our research employs a systematic quantitative literature review, analysing peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2024. By following established PRISMA guidelines, we have examined the benefits and challenges posed by AI in policing contexts across Europe, identifying several recurring themes, including concerns over privacy breaches, algorithmic biases, and the effects of AI on vulnerable communities. The results underscore the urgent need for regulatory frameworks that address these ethical challenges and promote transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices.
This presentation aims to illuminate the complex landscape of AI in law enforcement, offering insights that could shape future public policy and research initiatives. As AI continues to evolve, it is crucial to prioritise ethical considerations to ensure that its implementation benefits society as a whole.
